Ruby shut the gate softly behind her, then swung back up into the saddle. Her black amre shifted slightly under the weight, then walked forward purposefully, head held high. After a few minutes walking and trotting down the open path that weaved its way through the corn fields, Ruby came upon a widers ection of track. She nudged her horse into a canter, pounding over the sandy track. Pretty soon they were galloping, the mare's shiny hooves eating up the ground. Good girl Cher! Ruby screamed over the wind rushing in her ears. She slowed the mare back down and trotted her along, sitting comfortably in the saddle.
Her horse was named Dark Lady, Cher for short after the soulful singer Cher's 1974 hit Dark Lady. The words of the chorus described the black mare perfectly, as if they were being spoken from Ruby's lips.
Dark lady laughed and danced and lit the candles one by one,
Danced to her gypsy music til her brew was done.
Dark lady played black magic til the clock struck on the twelve,
she taught me more about me than I knew myself.[/b]
The words described how Cher (the horse) liked to dance and prance around, showing off. Ruby had often said that horses taught people things, their caring side, their danger side, parts of themselves they never knew existed. nd Cher did just that.
Ruby heard hoofbeats somewhere around her, then saw the tall corn to one side moving. She laughed.Hiya Haley! she called to her big sister, knowing who it was before she saw her.[/sub]
